Our journey

Gexcon company timeline showcasing key milestones from the 1970s to the present, highlighting significant developments such as the start of gas explosion research, the creation of FLACS, global expansion, and the focus on hydrogen and energy transition safety.
Our journey from pioneering gas explosion research to becoming the trusted safety and risk management partner for the world’s leading industries

Gexcon's journey began in the 1970s with dust explosion research at CMI and gas explosion research under the "Safety at the Continental Shelf" initiative.

In the 1980s, the first version of FLACS was developed, and Gexcon was established to provide FLACS consulting, focusing on understanding risks following the Piper Alpha accident.

The 1990s saw the development of new FLACS features, such as Dispersion, Far Field, and Water Spray, and the founding of Gexcon AS to commercialise FLACS and related services.

In the 2000s, CMR eProcess Safety, including R&D and Labs, merged with Gexcon, and Gexcon UK and Gexcon US were established.

The 2010s marked a period of global expansion into India, China, Indonesia, Australia, UAE, France, Sweden, Malaysia, and the Netherlands. The portfolio grew to include FLACS Fire, FLACS Risk, and FLACS VR/AVR. Gexcon became the exclusive distributor of Shell FRED, Shepherd & PIPA, and acquired the rights to EFFECTS and RISKCURVES software from TNO, with hydrogen safety identified as a strategic growth area.

The 2020s continued with significant milestones, including a partnership with the IChemE Safety Centre, a leadership role in energy transition, the launch of the FLACS Cloud HPC Service, and Gexcon's acquisition by Longship II PE Fund. The focus going forward remains on supporting a safe transition to sustainable energy and materials systems.

Active involvement in research projects

Moreover, we actively participate in diverse research projects, where we contribute to advancing knowledge and technologies in process safety to enhance safety measures, reduce risks, and prevent incidents. Moreover, Gexcon leverages project findings to continuously refine and enhance the dependability of our X-Suite software tools: FLACS, EFFECTS and RISKCURVES. Below is a table showcasing select projects that Gexcon participates in.

Project name

Project aim

SH2IFT II

The second part of the SH2IFT project (safe hydrogen fuel handling and use for efficient implementation) explores a risk-based approach for operational safety.

SAFEN

SAFEN aims to close the identified knowledge gaps in understanding failure mechanisms, hazards and accident situations in renewable technologies involving hydrogen, ammonia and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

SH2IFT

The first part of the SH2IFT project (safe hydrogen fuel handling and use for efficient implementation) focuses on the consequences of handling and use of large volumes of hydrogen within closed and semi-closed environments and in maritime transport.

HySEA

HySEA consists of pre-normative research on vented deflagrations in enclosures and containers for hydrogen energy applications.

Hy3DRM

The Hy3DRM project (3D Risk Management for hydrogen installations) aims to develop the 3D Risk Management concept for hydrogen installations, including a prototype for a hypothetical hydrogen refuelling station.

Research into DDT events and mitigation

The project is aimed at determining what factors initiate deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) and what measures can mitigate such events.

NFPA-funded project on hazard evaluation of A3 refrigerants

The project is aimed at evaluating the fire hazard of R-290 propane in refrigeration appliances used in commercial retail and kitchen settings.

AIRRE

The AIRRE project (assessing the influence of real releases on explosions) is aimed at improving the understanding of the effect realistic releases and turbulent flow conditions have on the consequences of accidental gas explosions in the petroleum industry.

CO2PipeHaz

The CO2PipeHaz project (Quantitative Failure Consequence Hazard Assessment for Next Generation CO2 Pipelines) is focused on the hazard assessment of CO2 pipelines to be employed as an integral part of CCS.

One thing about us stays the same: From the consequence and risk modelling software tools we develop and maintain combined with our expert consulting services and testing capabilities, our aim continues to be a purpose-led company with a passion for making the world a safer place.
